The PAYCE sponsored cars at the 2015 Bathurst 1000

The 2015 Bathurst 1000 event at Mount Panorama was a most exciting four days of on-the-edge racing as the weather changed strategies and performances.

Brian Boyd sends congratulations to PAYCE motor racing teams for their dynamic performances at Mount Panorama 2015

The six PAYCE backed racing teams competed across four categories in this year's Bathurst 1000 meeting with everyone delivering hard-fought results over the four days of racing. Changing weather conditions saw race strategies coming to the fore.

PAYCE Managing Director and senior Australian motorsport supporter, Mr. Brian Boyd said the drivers and the teams were to be heartily congratulated on their outstanding performances.

"The standout performance was Scott McLaughlin in the Bathurst 1000, along with co-driver Alex Premat, in the Wilson Security Racing GRM (Volvo Polestar Racing) #33 Volvo S60. Scott and Alex drove consistently hard throughout the race that saw fortunes changing with several safety car periods and showers and for them to finally take fifth spot when the chequered flag came out was well-deserved and a fantastic result," Brian Boyd said.

Volvos show solid race pace – Brian Boyd

Mr. Boyd witnessed both Volvos showing great pace in the practice sessions with Scott recording a quickest time of fifth on day one and David clocking an 11th fastest.

"Scott was on top of the speed trap times down Conrod Straight on day one, recording the fastest outright speed of the field with a breathtaking 296 kilometres per hour run," he said.

"Alex also got off to a good start in the co-drivers' session recording fourth fastest time. The scene was set for good performances from the team, barring incidents," continued brian Boyd.

Saturday's final practice a great result - Brian Boyd

In Saturday's final practice, Scott McLaughlin and Alex Premat stayed well in contention with eighth fastest time. Meanwhile, David Wall and Chris Pither were placed in 21st position. All team attention then focused on the shortened rescheduled top ten qualifying session, but not before Scott delivered a flying lap to place seventh fastest, putting the number 33 Volvo into the coveted top ten shootout.

The varying wet conditions prevalent throughout the shootout worked in the favour of some drivers though hampered others who grappled with the changing track conditions. Fortunately for Scott, he was the fourth car out on track with only light rain falling and put in a blinder of a lap.

"He did a blistering lap that put him in second position and then the team had to sit through the rest of the cars' runs to determine the final spots on the grid," Mr. Brian Boyd commented.

"All six following drivers were slower than Scott, putting the #33 on the front row of the grid for the first time this season," said Brian Boyd.

Number 33 Volvo S60 with Scott McLaughlin in the hot seat starts the race

Garry Rogers made the decision to start the number 33 Volvo S60 with Scott McLaughlin in the racing seat. While Scott was not able to replicate 2014's missile start that saw him late braking into the first corner in the lead from third spot on the grid, he raced aggressively and decisively to snare the lead on lap 3 and was never out challenged until lap 32. Teammates David Wall and Chris Pither were unfortunately very unlucky in car number 34 and their race came to an early demise on lap 15. An engine issue forced them to retire from the race.

David Wall said it was a disappointing result for the team, but there was no warning and the engine just lost a cylinder.

Ever the racer, David optimistically stated "That's the way it goes, so bring on the Gold Coast race."

With racing progressing, contrasting pit stop strategies plus yellow flagging had the #33 Volvo change order in the field, though always within reach of the leaders. McLaughlin conclusively brought the car home in 5th position and within ten seconds of the race winners. The team delivered a fantastic result given the fickleness of the weather and on-track incidents throughout the race.

Volvo S60 performs especially well in the wet conditions

The PAYCE-backed #33 Volvo S60 performed especially well in the unpredictable wet conditions and the team were happy with its overall performance and reliability under such challenging race conditions. The top five finish moved McLaughlin into the top 10 of the 2015 championship.

Scott McLaughlin noted it had been a rough day with the wet and dry conditions making it mentally draining for drivers.

"I was happy to climb into the top ten and Alex did a fantastic job in the race today. The team gave me a great car and a great strategy," he said. "Fifth is a good result, my best at Bathurst and there is more to come."

Scott McLaughlin and Alex Premat looked to be the class of the field in the opening period of the iconic Bathurst race, eclipsing the factory-backed Holden and Ford entries, being traditional leaders at the event.

Macauley Jones delivers a solid weekend of racing

Macauley Jones, driving the #14 PAYCE Commodore, delivered a strong weekend of racing. Macauley celebrated his 21st birthday just prior to the meeting, pointing to a great career as he develops further. The qualifying session on Friday was impaired by two red flag periods, but he held his stance with consistency to tally a top 10 finish with 7th fastest. This excellent session placed Macauley up the serious end of the grid for the Saturday mini-enduro, raced over 250 km.

The enduro, contested over 41 laps of hard racing, was run in a mix of conditions, with three safety car periods and a rain shower late in the piece. Jones drove a solid race and went wheel to wheel with a number of drivers to finish in eighth position, moved him to 12th position on the championship ladder.

"I'm eager to carry the good performance forward to the series decider at Homebush on 5-6 December," he said.

PAYCE's Brian Boyd impressed by mature approach of young racer

Brian Boyd sent his congratulations to Jones who scored his best result to date, saying he continues to impress the paddock with his driving and mature approach to racing.

"Macauley gives 100 per cent every time he is on the track and he is gaining valuable touring car experience with co-drives in this year's enduros," Mr. Boyd said.

Hot contest between the two PAYCE backed cars in TCM series

With expectations of a hot contest between the two PAYCE backed cars in the Touring Car Masters, Bowe took the mantle with two wins and a second place while Johnson landed one win and two seconds in the three TCM races.

With expectations of a hot contest between the two PAYCE backed cars in the Touring Car Masters, Bowe took the mantle with two wins and a second place while Johnson landed one win and two seconds in the three TCM races.

Johnson hit the qualifying lap record out of the park to slam Mustang Sally on the pole for the first race and led an action packed competition that was ultimately limited in time raced. Bowe, though limited, managed to move into second place and give PAYCE cars a 1-2 finish. Johnson scored a new race lap record to boot.

In the second race on Saturday, Bowe was keen to take complete advantage of his front row qualification and remind everyone why he is a champion. He pushed the superb Torana SLR5000 into the lead at the opening corner and was never bested. Johnson had to put in the hard work to hold onto his well deserved second place. Bowe and Johnson traded blows at the lap record as they went on to complete the race in prime 1-2 positioning again, only the names were reversed from the prior race. The final race on Sunday was Bowe's as he once again led Johnson home, though only by a slight margin of half a second.

Brian Boyd salutes a formidable racing team

Brian Boyd congratulated both PAYCE drivers on their gritty performances over the meeting and said they were a formidable racing team.

"Both cars are presented in immaculate condition and it's a credit to the teams that they are now the ones to beat," Brian Boyd said.

Young racer Richard Muscat delivers great result

The PAYCE backed #22 Porsche GT3, driven by young racer Richard Muscat, continued with solid running in early practice and recorded the fifth fastest time of the session. Considering he was back in the country less than 24 hours from his flight from Germany where he participated at the Lautizring in the Porsche Motorsport Junior Program, Richard delivered a great session of timed practice laps.

The qualifying session was tightly contested and ever exciting. The first ten racers were continually lapping under the track record. Richard's times were right up there, he put in a very mature drive to avoid a big crash and to post a seventh best timing. Richard finished in a very credible eighth position in race one later in the day.

Sunday racing was held under clearer weather conditions and Muscat had a stable race excepting one very close call. He came home not far behind the leading group to lock in 7th position.

Brian Boyd delivers congratulations to strong racer

"Richard has driven well all through the season and as he demonstrated at Bathurst he has the pace to run with the leaders and is ready to pounce if they put a wheel wrong," Mr. Boyd said.

"Overall, Bathurst was a great meeting for PAYCE drivers and their teams and importantly everyone stayed safe. All teams had challenging races and they can be justly proud of their performances over the weekend," Brian Boyd finished.
